Rims cemented into dental acrylic goggles that were made on the positive mold of the face

  1. Make a model of the monkey's face
    • Anesthetize the monkey with Ketamine.
    • Cover the eyes with Vaseline and gauze.
    • Make a negative impression with Jettrate Plus, available from most dental suppliers, made by:
         Jeltrate Plus
         The L.D. Caulk Division
         Dentsply International
         Milford, DE 19963-0359
    • Pour some Plaster of Paris over the back of the mold while is setting over the face.
    • When the impression material and the plaster is set, turn the impression over and pour Plaster of Paris into it to make a positive impression.

  2. Make the fitted goggles
    • Cover the Plaster of Paris impression with Vaseline.
    • Use dental acrylic to make the initial outlines of goggles around the eyes.
    • Check the fit, with the monkey's head fixed, and use the dremel to smooth the back of the goggles and adjust the fit.
    • Use some plasticine to position and hold the brass rims tangent to the face with the eyes in the center of the rims.
    • Add lots of dental acrylic to cement the rims in place and cover the entire field of view.
    • Cement the arm to mount the glasses to the head holder, again with the monkey's head fixed.

  3. Adapt the monkey to the goggles
    • The goggles should be positioned so that they don't touch the monkey's face.
    • We usually adapt the monkey's to the goggles without optics for a couple of nights.
    • Goggles should be removed daily to inspect the monkey's face and clean the optics.
