First and second year students must participate actively in three academic activities sponsored by the BMS program that are conducted weekly. In addition, there is an annual program meeting near Monterey. All student members of the program are strongly encouraged to participate in these activities:
BMS Pizza Talks
During the fall and winter quarters of each year,
students meet on a designated evening to share supper and hear
a member of the faculty discuss their research interest in an
informal atmosphere. The purpose of this exercise is to allow
students to learn of the research interest of faculty members
in the program. For first and second year students, the talks
are a useful way to find out about potential rotation laboratories.
BMS Student /Faculty Journal Club
On a designated day every
week at 12noon, BMS faculty and students meet in a Journal Club.
Two 30 min presentations will be made, one by a student member
and one by a faculty member of the program. Presentations will
be focused on a single recent publication deemed of interest by
the presenter. All students in years one through three will be
expected to make presentations once each year.
BMS Minicourse
At least once every year the program organizes
a minicourse open to all faculty and student members. The course
is focused on a single Biomedical problem of current interest.
Two full days of lectures and discussion are scheduled over a
weekend.
BMS Asilomar
]In the fall quarter students can attend a three
day retreat at the Asilomar Conference Center, near Monterey.
